Name that Organism

A number of years ago I read an article in a popular science magazine about these giant unicellular creatures. They were so big that they registered to humans as leaves, and in fact were sometimes eaten in some sort of salad. They lived underwater and, if I recall correctly, tended to be connected to each other in chains.

Does anyone know what the heck I'm talking about? Because I'd really like to remember what these things are called.

UPDATE: spoothbrush correctly (I think) identifies this vague memory with the genus Caulerpa. In related news, check out these other giant cells.
